HERAT CITY - Police in the western Herat province said they had arrested eight Iranian nationals with arms in the border district of Gulran on Tuesday.
Border police chief Colonel Mohammad Ayub Safi said the arrested people were residents of Iran's Khurasan province. They entered the district last night and took refuge in a house in the Chashma Aspha area, said the police officer.
"We discovered on Ak-47 assault rifle and a pistol from the detainees, who had admitted during initial investigations that they had entered to purchase and smuggle opium," Safi added.
This was the first time Iranian nationals were arrested with arms in Herat, informed the officer. Earlier, three Iranians were captured in the province some two months back.
