Kabul - Afghanistan's national football team didn't qualify for the World Cup finals due to start in a month in Germany, but with the Germans' help, it isn't to miss out on football fever.
A 'mini-World Cup championship' is to take place at the beginning of June in Kabul under the patronage of German Ambassador Rainald Steck.
Teams from 16 Afghan schools, each of which are to represent a country taking part in the World Cup in Germany, are to compete against one another.
But sport is not to be the only focus of the mini-World Cup. The tournament is to also be combined with a question-and-answer game on democracy in which schoolchildren are to learn more about the Afghan Constitution and European governments.
The tournament with the motto 'Kick-off for Democracy' is being sponsored by the German embassy, Germany's Konrad Adenauer and Hanns Seidel foundations, the Goethe Institute, the German-supported Amani School and Siemens.
