KABUL - Tribal leaders have opposed the creation of a local militia in the remote northeastern province of Badakhshan, President Hamid Karzai’s office said on Sunday.
At a meeting with the elders, Karzai also discussed the upcoming elections, the peace process, political stability and capacity-building of the Afghan National Army.
Religious scholars from different districts of the province shared their views with the president on issues of national importance, a statement from the Presidential Palace said.
The tribal leaders expressed strong opposition to the creation of the local militia and instead called for increasing the strength of the Afghan Army.
