Afghanistan foils dozens of terrorist plots over past weeks

KABUL - Afghan security departments foiled dozens of terrorist attempts in less than one month, presidential spokesman Mohammad Karim Rahimi said Tuesday.

"In their efforts to ensure our people's safety, our security organs have detected and foiled dozens of terrorist plots in this country over the past two or three weeks," Rahimi told a press conference here.

Due to rising Taliban-linked violence this year, Afghanistan has plunged into the worst spate of bloodshed since the Taliban regime was toppled nearly five years ago.

Rahimi said foiling terrorist activities, particularly suicide bombing attacks, was very difficult, but the security apparatus at least had reduced the casualties by detecting some terrorist plots.

Over the past months, numerous bomb attacks have stricken various regions in this country, especially in the capital city of Kabul and the southern Kandahar province.

On Monday, a suicide car bombing killed three civilians and injured five persons including a NATO solider in Kandahar city, the provincial capital of Kandahar province.

On the same day, the police thwarted a suicide car bombing in Kabul on a road to the Kabul International Airport. The bomber blew himself up when he was blocked by the police, only slightly injuring three civilians.

The Taliban has said it now owns hundreds of would-be suicide bombers, who would attack government and foreign targets at unknown time.

The police say scores of suicide bombers has sneaked into Kabul, waiting for their chance to launch attacks.

Amid deteriorating security, over 2,400 people, mostly Taliban militants, have been killed in Afghanistan this year.
