London — The Foreign Office announced Wednesday that it was appointing a woman ambassador to Afghanistan. Rosalind Marsden, the director of the Asia-Pacific, would take up the post in October in succession to Ronald Nash, who was appointed only last March.
Afghanistan, five months after reopening the British Embassy in Kabul for the first time in over a decade.
Following the fall of the Taliban regime last November, the UK sent former army officer, Stephen Evans, to reopen the embassy. But after less than a month, he was replaced by seasoned diplomat Andrew Tesoriere as the UK's resident representative.
At the time, the Foreign Office said it had a policy of 'rotating' its diplomats in Kabul because of facilities in Afghanistan were very basic. The UK also has a separate special envoy to Afghanistan, currently Tom Phillips. The post was first held by David Reddaway, who was assigned with the task after being rejected as Britain's ambassador to Tehran last year.
