Standard Chartered Bank has become the first major international bank to have a presence in Afghanistan with the opening of a branch in Kabul.
In a statement, Standard Chartered said the branch was officially launched on Jan 19. It will initially offer general banking services such as deposit taking in Afghani and major international currencies, facilitating international money transfers and trade services on selected secured transactions.
Its group chief executive officer Mervyn Davies said, “This is a great opportunity to partner the reconstruction process and serve our customers.” Standard Chartered has been operating in many Middle East countries for over 50 years.
