Pajhwak 02/24/2008By Abdul Matin Sarferaz [Printer Friendly Version] KUNDUZ CITY - Officials of Agriculture department in Kunduz province said illegal cutting of forests by timber mafia and former local commanders is still continued. Abdul Aziz Nekzad, agriculture department head told Pajhwok Afghan News most trees are cut in Qala-i-Zal and Imam Sahab districts which are bordering Tajikistan. He said former local commanders and irresponsible armed people destroy the forests illegally and if not prevented the forest will be completely demolished in Kunduz province. He said protection of forest was the task of border police and they should prevent it. However Brigadier General Syed Habib Khalili, an official of border police in northeastern zone rejected the claims. He told this news agency: "border police do not let any one to cut forests" He said some people ask border police to allow them cut forests, but they will never allow them, because cutting forests is against the law. Ghulam Muhammad Daqiq, head of environmental protection department in northeastern zone confirmed that the forests have been cut off which has very bad effects on environment. He added cutting of the trees in beach of Amu River caused thousands of acres of land to be destroyed. According to Nekzad, Kunduz province has over 30000 hectare forests including fruit and non fruit trees, mostly in Imam Sahab, Qala-i-Zal, Chahar Dara and Ali Abad districts.
