Food News06/26/2012By [Printer Friendly Version] AFGHANISTAN's sultana crop is expected to be very large this year, although as ever exact figures are extremely difficult to come by. As one Turkish source who knows the area well commented: "We never know the amounts, just how it compares with the previous year". What was once a large and profitable industry, before the first gulf war, is now a small but growing sector, although poppy production still dominates the landscape. Opium commands far more money than sultanas and for those who are very poor there is little choice.
